Cutting tools developed at VIRIAL Ltd. were successfully tested at the Cherepovets works of JSC “Severstal”. сBN composite-based inserts boosted the productivity by allowing the machining of up to 3-4 times more mill rolls , as compared to the previously used inserts.
Tests compared inserts made of hard material specially developed at VIRIAL for materials used in cast iron bar roll mills. Cubic boron nitride used for these inserts led to high resistance to impacts and heat loads, as well as improved tool life. The new VIRIAL development unique for the Russian market is a full-top insert on a hardmetal substrate that demonstrated optimal tool life for roll roughing operations. The said tests were also the opportunity to optimize the configuration of inserts, cutting angles and workpiece processing conditions.
Successful testing led to VIRIAL being awarded a contract for insert supply by JSC “Severstal”; two batches of tool products have already been shipped to the customer.
