Face seal rings

Description

Face seals are typically found in pumps and compressors, mixers and chemical machinery; their function is to seal the rotating shaft against the stationary casing. Face seals are installed into gasket box (stuffing box) to prevent leakage of the pumped liquid. Face seals consist of friction pair (stationary and rotating sealing rings), steel cage, rubber or metal bellows, springs. etc.

The choice of material for sealing rings is affected by various factors, including design and application of the face seal unit, properties of the sealed liquid, liquid temperature and pressure, shaft rotation frequency and load born by the pair, friction zone temperature, and target service life.

Face seal rings could be made of silicon-infiltrated, sintered, or liquid phase-sintered silicon carbide, WC-based and tungsten-free cemented carbides, zirconia- and alumina-based compositions. Large-sized and special-design sliding rings are made of Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) materials.

Applications

Standard friction pairs for various types of face seals are typically made of silicon-infiltrated silicon carbide (SiSiC).
